About the Magazine Committee of Government Law College, Mumbai
The Magazine Committee of Government Law College, Mumbai curates the annual magazine of the college titled méLAWnge, it is not just an annual publication, but a part of Aeonian history. The first edition of the college magazine was published in 1930, covering discussions on civil marriage law and the art of advocacy. Throughout its rich history spanning 94 years, méLAWnge has stood as a constant, amid the evolving tapestry of India’s legal landscape. The magazine has meticulously documented the metamorphosis of legal discourse and serves as a chronicle of our collective journey in the legal sphere, capturing the past, present, and future of legal thoughts and practices in India.
Through “méLAWnge”, we want to capture the voice of our diverse student body as well as promulgate the ideas and insights of illustrious alumni and renowned legal experts. It is for this reason that students, professors, lawyers and judges have come together, once again, to breathe life into this edition.
About Our Patron – J. E. Dastur
The late Mr Jal E. Dastur, in whose memory this competition is being sponsored, was a practising Chartered Accountant and a member of both the English and the Indian institutes. He was the sole proprietor of the firm M/s. E. J. Dastur & Co. is a firm founded by his father, Mr. Erach J. Dastur, and himself. He was an alumnus of Government Law College, Mumbai and graduated with distinction therefrom over sixty years ago. He won several debating and elocution competitions at the city, state and national levels.

This competition, held in memory of the esteemed Mr. Jal E. Dastur, aims to provide a vibrant platform for creative writers from across the nation. We invite all aspiring writers to showcase their talents and express their creativity. Don’t miss this opportunity to make your voice heard and celebrate the art of storytelling!
The Topics for this year’s edition are:
- Conclude your story with the following sentence :
“….and she felt stars were brighter tonight.”
- Incorporate the following objects in your story
Crystal ball | Match box | Disposable Camera.
- Build your story around the following characters:
Sylvia Plath, Franz Kafka and Fyodor Dostoevsky meet in a junkyard.
- Build a story revolving around the following image.
Eligibility
- Participants must have passed their HSC/CBSE/ISC (10+2) or any other equivalent examination.
- They must presently be enrolled in a graduation course in any field.
- Postgraduate (Degree) course students are not eligible.
- Postgraduate (Diploma) course students are eligible to participate.
- Only single authorship is permitted. An entry co-authored by two or more students will not be accepted.
- The decision of the organising committee as to eligibility shall be final and binding.

- The first prize-winning entry will be published in the 94th edition of méLAWnge, the Annual College Magazine of Government Law College, Mumbai. All publishing rights will remain with the organising committee.
- The top 7 entries will be published on the GLC Magblog.

Submission Guidelines
- Language: English
- Submissions must be original and unpublished works of the author.
- Font: Times New Roman
- Font Size: 12
- Line Spacing: 1.5
- Margin: One inch on all sides
- Paper Size: A4
- Word Limit: Each entry should be no shorter than 1500 words, and no longer than 3500 words. Marks will be deducted for violation of the word limit.
- Alignment: Justified
- Plagiarism will result in automatic disqualification.
- The use of artificial intelligence to write or rephrase words will result in disqualification.
- Title of the submission document must be the author’s allotted team code.
- Participants must not disclose their names or any identifying information in their submission documents. If such details are found, the submission will be rejected and disqualified.
Competition Rules
- All submissions will undergo a strict online plagiarism check.
- In case of any dispute, the decision of the professor in charge and student editors will be final.
- It is the responsibility of each participant to ensure that the “.doc”/”.docx” file of the submission can be opened legibly with Google Docs/Microsoft Word.
- In addition to the Word document, participants are also required to submit their entries in PDF format.
- The team code for submission will be sent after the registration deadline has expired. Kindly do not contact the organising committee regarding the team code before then.
- Submission of the essays will take place via the following google form.
- Each participant is permitted to submit only one entry.

Miscellaneous
- All entries shall be deemed to be the property of ‘Belles-Lettres J. E. Dastur Memorial Government Law College Short Fiction Essay Writing Competition’, which reserves the right of publication of the same in any periodical, journal, book, electronic resource or in any other manner as it may deem appropriate.
- The organising committee’s decision as regards the interpretation of rules or any other matter related to the competition shall be final.
- In the event that any situation arises, that is not contemplated in the rules, the organising committee’s decision on the same shall be final. The organising committee reserves the right to vary, alter, or repeal any of the above rules as they deem appropriate.
- The decision of the judges shall be final and binding on all concerned.
